The old adage “fish is brain food” is true. A single meal of fish per week reduces the normal age-related decline in intelligence by 10% to 13%. This is the equivalent of being mentally three or four years younger. Those who did not eat fish had a decline four times the rate of those who eat fish at least twice a week. Eating a regulated dose of fish every week reduces the risk of heart disease and increases the chances of survival after a heart attack. Fish oil is also known to reduce the “stickiness” of the blood, limiting its tendency to clot.

We all know that fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids, but, did you know that these increase the levels of serotonin in the human brain? Serotonin helps the mind stay more optimistic and happier, decreasing the instances of depression and lower mood swings. In children, the risk of asthma can be greatly reduced if given a regular diet of fish. Fish is rich in protein, making up for a lot of nutritious components required during the growing stages.

Eating fish helps limit the risk of high blood pressure. Therefore, the chances of developing Dementia or Alzheimer’s are greatly reduced. The brain cells will suffer lesser risk of damage due to the presence of polyunsaturated fatty acid in most kinds of fish. Not only arthritis, but most types of inflammatory conditions are very well combated with the help of the Omega-3 fatty acids as well, helping to control the cycle of inflammation in the body, and can be found in fish such as mackerel, tuna, sardines, salmon and trout.

A diet that contains fish such as salmon is known to act as a skin-enhancing regime. The regular, yet moderate consumption of fish has anti-aging, anti-wrinkle effects, making the skin naturally younger-looking.
